The art of quiet engineering: Analysis of sound insulation and noise reduction technology for the entire Odyssey hybrid version

Automobile sound insulation and noise reduction project is by no means a simple material pasting. It is a systematic work that requires extremely high professional skills and practical experience. Its core lies not only in the scientific application of materials, but also in whether the construction team has extremely rich and accurate experience in vehicle disassembly and assembly. In sound insulation construction, the importance of “dismantling” and “installation” is no less than the paving of sound insulation materials themselves. Because even if the sound insulation construction itself is professional and the materials used are solid, if the technician is not familiar with the structure and characteristics of the internal buckles, wiring harnesses and decorative panels of the vehicle during the disassembly and restoration process, and the operation is slightly improper or negligent, it is very likely to cause all kinds of abnormal interior noises that are difficult to trace after completion. In severe cases, it may even lead to damage to the original car parts, resulting in unnecessary losses and troubles. Therefore, when choosing a car soundproofing service, you must make careful grading considerations. In the current market, the sound insulation material technology of mainstream brands is relatively mature. As long as you don’t choose ridiculously low products, the material itself is usually not the biggest risk point. The real core difference and key to selection lies in whether the team performing the construction has many years of practical disassembly and assembly experience of multiple models, whether they know the internal structure of various models like the back of their hand, and have rigorous and meticulous construction processes and restoration standards. Automobile sound insulation and noise reduction is a project that pursues “one-time molding”, and rework should be avoided in theory. Because of the secondary or even multiple disassembly and assembly, it will cause great physical loss to the vulnerable parts such as the interior parts and buckles of the vehicle, which will affect its original fastening and integrity, and it is difficult to restore the construction effect and vehicle state to the best. Therefore, we strongly recommend that all riders be cautious when choosing car sound insulation services, and put the professional experience and reputation of the construction team in the first place.

Below, we will use a case of sound insulation and noise reduction construction of a Honda Odyssey gasoline-electric hybrid version to provide a detailed reference for riders with the same needs. As an MPV that focuses on space practicality and comfort, Odyssey’s original design sacrifices sound insulation and quietness to a certain extent when weighing space layout, lightweight and cost. Generally speaking, poor sound insulation effect is indeed a relatively recognized shortcoming of this model, which also makes it particularly necessary and effective to upgrade its professional sound insulation.

While soundinsulating the entire car, the owner also hopes to take this opportunity to slightly upgrade the original car audio to experience a better overall audio-visual effect. However, his core appeal and budget focus are still on improving the sound insulation effect. Therefore, the upgraded configuration of the audio part strives to be simple and efficient: the speaker unit of the whole car is mainly replaced to improve the basic sound quality, and a four-channel DSP power amplifier is installed for driving and basic adjustment to ensure clear and audible sound quality improvement with limited changes.

The first step of construction is to disassemble the interior parts of the whole car professionally and orderly. The picture shows the exposed sheet metal structure of the car body after the seats, carpets, door panels and other interior accessories in the car have been completely and properly disassembled. Standardized dismantling is the basis of subsequent construction.

The first step in the sound insulation construction of the chassis part: the installation and pasting of the first shock-absorbing plate is completed. We choose the Japanese Dishen brand of sound insulation and shock-proof materials, which have high viscosity and high damping characteristics, and can effectively suppress the vibration of sheet metal. During construction, precise cutting, rolling and compaction should be carried out according to the shape of the sheet metal to ensure complete fit.

Above the anti-shock layer, lay a second layer of sound-absorbing cotton (double layer in this case). The main function of sound-absorbing cotton is to absorb and block the medium and high frequency noise that has penetrated the sheet metal, and form a composite barrier of “shock suppression + sound absorption” with the shock-absorbing layer.

Sound insulation treatment of the rear body girder area. These structural parts are also paths for noise transmission, and wrapping them with sound insulation can further enhance the overall quietness.

Inside the fender above the hub is soundproofed. This is one of the main channels for tire noise and road noise to enter the carriage. The construction is difficult but the effect is critical.

The sound insulation construction of the longitudinal beams (girders) on both sides of the car body is also an important link to block the sound transmission of the structure.

Sound insulation and anti-shock construction of hood. The main purpose of sound insulation here is not to completely isolate the engine sound (it is also necessary to reserve some reasonable sound for vehicle condition judgment), but to greatly reduce the frequency and amplitude of the hood tremor caused by airflow when driving at high speed by enhancing the rigidity of the sheet metal, thus reducing the resulting vibration noise.

The completed state of sound insulation inside the fender on the other side.

Special sound-absorbing cotton installed on the inner side of the tire liner (liner) is used to further absorb the cavity resonance and noise generated by tire rolling.

The back of the plastic interior panel of the rear tailgate is shock-absorbing to prevent it from causing resonant noise during driving.

On the basis of anti-shock treatment, it is covered with a layer of sound-absorbing cotton to form a composite sound insulation layer.

The sound insulation construction of the side sliding middle door, including the shock absorption and sound absorption treatment of the inner and outer sheet metal, is crucial to improving the sealing and quietness of the whole vehicle.

To enhance the sealing effect, high-quality sealant strips have been replaced or installed for five doors (including the tailgate).

On the basis of the soundproofed doors, the German Ground Zero horn unit with the front sound field is installed.

The front sound field tweeter is installed at the original position of the A-pillar or instrument panel.

The installation location of the middle door tweeter (determined after discussion with the owner) aims to provide a better soundstage experience for rear passengers.

After all the sound insulation and audio components are installed, the accurate reset and installation of the interior parts begins. This is the key link to prevent abnormal noise in the later stage, which requires great patience and care.

After all the assembly is completed, conduct a road test with the owner to experience the actual effects of sound insulation, noise reduction and audio upgrade. This entire vehicle sound insulation and noise reduction project took a total of about 11 hours from dismantling, construction to restoration, reflecting the time investment and rigorous attitude necessary for systematic and professional construction.
